"Luck Be a Lady" is a song that was written by Frank Loesser in 1950. First performed by Simon Mullins, "Luck Be a Lady" was featured in the musical Guys and Dolls. Being from the musical, the song's lyrics tell a tale about a character from the musical trying to win a dice game to win the girl of his dreams.

This song was first recorded in 1963 to be part of the Reprise compilation Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre. It was a feature on disk 4 of the compilation, of which all of the songs were written by Frank Loesser. It was later added to the album Sinatra '65: The Singer Today, as part of a collection of other Reprise studio recordings.

As time went by, Frank Sinatra covered this song in the album My Kind of Broadway, and he also sang the song live for the album Sinatra at the Sands as well as in the film remake of Guys and Dolls. The Sinatra at the Sands version of this song can only be found on the 1988 and 2003 releases of the album. Other live versions of the song can be found on Sinatra Saga and Live from Las Vegas.

Sinatra also later, under Capitol Records, re-recorded this song as a duet featuring Chrissie Hynde for his 1994 album Duets II.

Lyrics[]

<poem> They call you lady luck But there is room for doubt At times you've had a very unlady-like way of running out

You're on this date with me The Pickens have been lush And yet before this evening is over You might give me the brush

You might forget your manners You might refuse to stay And so the best that I can do is pray

Luck be a lady tonight Luck be a lady tonight Luck if you've ever been a lady to begin with Luck be a lady tonight

Luck let a gentleman see How nice a dame you can be I know the way you've treated other guys you've been with Luck, be a lady with me

A lady doesn't leave her escort It isn't fair, it isn't nice A lady doesn't wander all over the room And blow on some other guy's dice

Let's keep this party polite Never get out of my sight Stick me with me baby, I'm the fella you came in with Luck, be a lady tonight

Luck, let a gentleman see Just how nice a dame you can be I know the way you've treated other guys you've been with Luck be a lady with me

A lady doesn't leave her escort It isn't fair , and it's not nice A lady doesn't wander all over the room And blow on some other guy's dice

So let's keep the party polite Never get out of my sight Stick with me baby, I'm the guy that you came in with Luck be a lady Luck be a lady Luck be a lady, tonight
